Global media conglomerate News Corporation entered the Serbian market in December 2006 with its flagship Fox TV after it had obtained a national frequency in a tender organised by the Serbian Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media, REM. It started off with entertainment programming mostly relying on old and inexpensive American sitcoms, dramas, and soaps such as The Bold and the Beautiful, ALF, One Tree Hill with two newscasts, evening and nightly one. Later it renewed its line-up with franchised quiz-shows and reality TV shows. The viewership stake was going up but Fox remained a money-losing operation in 2007 and 2008. It therefore faced restructuring and massive layoffs before its sale to Greek owned Antenna Group in August 2009. In the following year, it changed its named to Prva TV and new management led by Dejan Jocic, a German-born Serb and former ProSieben managing director, it expanded to Montenegro and started raising its audience share quickly with various entertainment programmes. Today, it is the third best ranked TV station with news programme in the country with 9.83% audience share, according to Nielsen survey covering the period from March 31. 2016 to April 1. 2017.
One of the biggest controversies related to the station is probably the best kept public secret that Prva TV and B92 TV have had the same owner for few years thus violating then legislation on broadcasting which forbid owners of TV stations with national frequnecy to have more than 5% shares in the ownership structure of another TV station with national frequency. This violation of media concentration was circumvented with new legislation which took into force in August 2014 enabling same owner for TV stations with national frequency as long as the TV stations together do not have more than 35% audience share.
